Food Security is a topic that is not spoken about enough, because of the lack of education and awareness around it.
Should you care about Food Security even though food is easily accessible to you whenever you are hungry? Short answer is, Yes!
FOOD SECURITY means that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life. – United Nations Committee on World Food Security.
With a TT$5 billion food import bill during a time of global uncertainty partly owing to COVID-19 we must ask ourselves, can the nation continue to afford or even have access to imported food next month, next year or the year after? If the answer is yes, at what cost will we bear? Rising prices in groceries was observed in the year 2020 when the world was shaken by COVID-19 and there is no sign of food becoming more affordable. Local government began heavily pushing initiatives encouraging persons to grow their own food at home. The message behind this probably being that we as a people need to be more responsible and help in any way we can to assist the nation, even in what may seem a small step. The reality is we cannot sit back and wait for the government to resolve all of our issues, we need to find ways to help ourselves.
If gardening is not your thing, let’s help our fellow citizens and buy local. ‘Buy Local’ has turned into a trending slogan, however, now more than ever, persons are recognising its true meaning. At the end of the day if you can grow your own lettuce, tomatoes and seasonings, knowing that prices are skyrocketing in supermarkets, will you?
